Veterans Appreciation Event
Hosting a veterans event helps remind veterans that their community values them and is there to support them. It offers an opportunity for the broader public to show appreciation for veterans, reinforcing a sense of gratitude and recognition that can sometimes be lacking in everyday life. This public acknowledgment can be a powerful reminder that veterans are an integral part of their communities and society at large. This year the Kiwanis Club of Washington GA hosted a Veteran’s Appreciation Event at our local VFW Post 5899, catered locally by Miller’s Bistro, included heartfelt letters written by students at Washington Wilkes Elementary School and inspiring words by Col. Andy Anderson. This project served 55 members of our community, including 26 veterans.
Dictionary Project
Each year Kiwanis Club of Washington GA commemorates the October birthday of Noah Webster, who in 1806 published “A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language”, the first truly American dictionary. For more than 18 years Kiwanis has provided personal copies of the Merriam-Webster Student Dictionary to third graders in our Primary School. This project served 100 children of the community.
College Scholarship to a WWCHS Senior
Each year our Kiwanis Club provides a $1000 scholarship to a Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School Senior. Our club awarded its 2024 Kiwanis Scholarship to WWCHS Senior Caleb Lawson. Caleb will attend Kennesaw State University this fall to study Electrical Engineering. His achievements include membership in FBLA and National Honor Society, as well as community service distributing toys for Wilkes County Kids and serving as a parking attendant for Mule Day. Congratulations to Caleb on his accomplishments. This project served 1 high school senior and their family.
Art & Talent Showcase
By combining ticket sales, participant fees and donations, our annual art and talent showcase serves as an enjoyable and successful fundraiser that helps support the club’s ongoing projects. Not only does it raise much-needed funds, but it also fosters a sense of community and appreciation for local talent, all while showcasing the creativity and spirit of our community.
Washington Georgia Tour of Homes
The largest fundraiser of the year is the Spring Festival and Tour of Homes Washington, GA. From grand mansions steeped in opulence to charming cottages brimming with character, each home on this tour offers a glimpse into a different chapter of history, where every room whispers secrets and every corner exudes nostalgia.
